The mushroom coffin is a container, not a disposition method. It is grown rather than manufactured: mycelium — the root structure of fungus — is bound to a hemp or flax substrate in a mold and allowed to colonize it, producing a rigid, lightweight shell in about a week. It contains no glue, no varnish, no metal fasteners and no plastic. It is used for natural burial, and its ecological case rests almost entirely on the ground it is buried in rather than on the box itself.
The process
Mycelium is introduced to a substrate of hemp or flax fiber inside a form and kept warm and humid. The fungal network grows through the fiber and knits it into a solid structure, which is then dried to stop growth — the finished shell is dormant, not living, whatever the marketing implies. No embalming is used, and the body is placed inside unclothed or in natural fiber. Once buried at natural-burial depth, the shell is designed to break down quickly: the leading manufacturer states its cocoon degrades in roughly forty-five days under burial conditions, against decades for a varnished hardwood casket and effectively never for a sealed metal one. Because the container adds almost no persistent material to the grave, what remains is the ordinary process of aerobic decomposition returning the body's nutrients to the soil column.
Environmental scorecard
No kiln, no retort, no fuel burned to make it and none to use it. Grown in days from an agricultural by-product rather than milled from hardwood or smelted from steel, and it introduces no vault, no lacquer and no metal into the grave — which is where most cemetery leachate actually comes from[reference].
Honest caveat
This is the caveat that matters most on this page: the coffin is not the method. A mycelium shell buried in a conventional lawn cemetery that still requires a concrete vault, mows weekly and irrigates delivers a small fraction of the benefit — you have replaced one container with a better container inside a system that is doing the damage. The ground does the ecological work; the coffin only avoids getting in its way. Claims that these coffins actively remediate contaminated soil or "enrich" the earth beyond ordinary decomposition come from manufacturers and are not, as far as we can find, independently verified. Treat the container as a way to avoid harm rather than as a way to do good.
Legal status
Because it is a container rather than a process, its legality follows burial law: it is permitted wherever natural burial is permitted, which is every US state[reference]. No state requires a casket for burial at all, and none requires embalming as a general rule. The friction is the same friction natural burial faces everywhere — individual cemetery policy, since many private cemeteries still mandate a vault or a rigid outer container, and county zoning where burial is on private land[reference]. Ask the specific cemetery what it accepts before buying anything, and ask whether the burial ground itself is certified[reference].
